Can I use my drone during my whale watching tour in Australia?

We understand you want to take the most amazing photos and videos of the whales migration but we would highly recommend to enjoy the whales for the beauty and majesty of them and not to disturb them with buzzing noises and drones hooping all over the place.

However if you really wish to source your own footage, please make sure to follow the below rules from CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority):

  • For CASA, drones have the same rules as for helicopters
  • Make sure you have the right permit
  • No hovering and do not approach the whales from the front
  • Respect the 500-metre exclusion zone around whales for drones
  • Make sure to seek prior arrangement and approval with your tour provider
